Don't forget it is Carnival Party Day on Wednesday 29th February. Parents have kindly been asked to bring in a little food for this day and children can dress in fancy dress. The day will be a fun filled day of Carnival activities. Thursday 1st March and Friday 2nd March, there will be no school.

Making our story books

In Literacy this week, we made our own story books based on the book 'So Much' by Trish Cooke. We used the repeated phrase in the book to make our own sentences and illustrated each page with a picture. We talked about babies:how they look and how they have different needs. We enjoyed playing the role of a 'mum' or 'dad' to help bath a baby and prepare them for bed!

We learnt the sounds 'qu', 'ou' and 'oi' in Phonics this week and lots of vocabulary related to each sound e.g. queen, quack, quilt, mouth, cloud, house, oil, boil and coin.

In Numeracy this week, we have been learning about position and we will continue this into next week. We have been playing lots of games to help us remember and use positional language.

In topic work this week, we finished off our animal masks and enjoyed going out on the playground to meet our parents as 'tigers'. We also played a group matching game, where we had to match up baby animals to their mothers. We are all very good at taking turns in group games now.

It was Valentine's Day on Tuesday so this week in topic, we finished off our cards and talked about who we were going to send them to. We also began making a tiger mask, which we will finish properly next week. In Literacy this week, we continued reading poems about animals and listening for rhyming words. We worked with the teacher in groups to make up our own poems. They were really good!

In numeracy this week, we have been learning to write the numbers to 10 correctly. This is something that we can also practice at home. We have also been estimating amounts and counting above 10, matching the number counted in a set to the correct numeral.

Our School Trip to the Farm - 10th February

On Friday, we had an excellent school trip to the farm. We saw lots of different animals (dog, cows, pigs, lambs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks, hens, peacock, goats, baby birds) and even got to feed them. The guide of the farm taught us lots of things. We learned lots of animals names and the names of their babies. We got to see a baby rabbit, baby birds, baby lambs and baby goats.

We also learned what the animals give to us e.g. milk, cheese, meat etc. In the classroom over the next few weeks, we will looking at our photos of the farm and learning to name all the animals in English.

This week in Literacy we have been looking at Poetry. We have read a range of dinosaur poems and listened carefully to the words. With the teacher, we played a range of games to encourage us to recognise words that rhyme. In Phonics, we learned the new sounds sh, th and th and vocabulary related to these sounds such as sheep, shoe, shell, ship, three, theatre, thunder and thermometer. We collaged a sheep for 'sh' and decorated a python for 'th' for part of our animals display.

In Numeracy this week, we started learning to add by partitioning. We used magnetic cards of animals to help us see this visually on our whiteboards then worked with the teacher to make the corresponding number sentence.

School Trip - Friday 10th February

Remember we have a school trip on Friday. K1 and K2 are off to visit the farm. It is an excellent school trip where the children will learn lots about animals. Please ensure your child brings to school that day: a small bag (rucksack if possible), a bottle of water, a sun hat, a raincoat or jacket and their snack.

Making a dinosaur zoo with Duplo

We moved onto our next set of sounds this week in Phonics by learning y, x and ch. We talked about different objects with these sounds: yoghurt, yak, yellow, fox, box, x-ray, chocolate, children and cheese. We also learned the key words 'yes' and 'was' and thought of sentences with these words. In Literacy this week, we continued our work from last week by making up our own simple dinosaur stories. We choose a good and bad dinosaur and drew pictures to go with the story.

In Numeracy this week, we practiced the vocabulary 'more' and 'less'. We also began to take away by counting back. As part of our Numeracy, on Friday we made biscuits. The children loved being 'mini cooks' and helped to measure the ingredients and stir it all together. We made one big biscuit of a 'Diplodocus' dinosaur for us all to share and then made one animal biscuit each to take home. I hope you liked them - they were very tasty! :)

For topic work this week, we talked about what the land would have looked like when dinosaurs were alive. We pretended we were a bird flying in the sky and discussed the things we would see from this view e.g. trees, water, rocks, swamp. Most of us realised that there would be no people or houses. We then used our ideas to make dinosaur land maps.

This week in Numeracy our focus was 2-D shape. Through a range of games and activities, we continued naming and describing the 4 basic shapes (triangle, rectangle, circle and square). We also learned the new shape 'oval'. We also looked at symmetry by decorating one side of a butterfly template with paint, then folding it in half to make a symmetrical painting.

In Literacy this week, we read lots of stories about Dinosaurs and talked about them. We talked about 'good' and 'bad' dinosaurs and designed our own profile of a 'good' dinosaur, thinking about where he would live, what he would look like, what he would eat and who his friends would be.

In Topic this week, we made dinosaur music using a range of instruments. We learned which instruments we could play to represent different sounds (e.g. flapping of wings, crunching leaves, stamping, roaring, running). We also looked at pictures of fossils after reading a story earlier in the week about a little boy who found a fossil of a dinosaur footprint. Miss Joanne told us about fossils and how these have helped us find out about dinosaurs today.

This week we continued looking at dinosaurs as part of our overall topic. In Literacy, we choose our favourite dinosaur to draw then with the help of Miss Joanne used information books, posters etc to find out some information about it. Some of us are very interested in learning about dinosaurs and we have been asking some interesting questions about them, such as "Why are dinosaurs not here anymore?" "Does a T-Rex want to eat people?" " Is the diplodocus as big as the classroom?".

In Numeracy this week, we used the dinosaurs to help us with our counting and estimating, We also put the dinosaurs in a line and labelled them '1st', '2nd' '3rd' etc. We are all beginning to understand ordinal language.

As part of our topic work this week, we made a dinosaur scene which some of the children showed in our 'good work' assembly. For this, we used our painting, printing and collage skills.

The dinosaur egg

Welcome back to Term 2 in K2. This term our topic is animals so we will be learning and doing lots of activities around this theme. This week we have began our animal theme by looking at dinosaurs. We were very excited when Miss Joanne found a big egg in her garden and after a little research, we found out it was probably a dinosaur egg. We discussed what we could do with it and decided to put it somewhere safe and wait to see what would happened. To our amazement one day, a baby dinosaur hatched out of it. This week in Literacy, we have been busy finding out information about our pet dinosaur & playing games to help us learn more about other dinosaurs.

In Numeracy this week, we focused on looking at size and counting objects up to 10. We measured how tall the toy dinosaurs were with cubes and even measured our footprints against a dinosaur footprint.

In phonics, we continued our journey of sounds by learning z, w and ng. We decorated a 'zebra' for 'z' and sponge painted a 'whale' for 'w'.

Please continue to practice these sounds every week with your child, along with the 'key words' in preparation for reading this term.

Christmas!

The last couple of weeks in school we completed Christmas activities and had lots of exciting things to do. We all enjoyed taking part in the 'Christmas Show'. We looked very nice as gold stars so a big thank you to all the parents for making the costumes :). I hope you all enjoyed the day!

We had fun making Christmas cards and calendars during our topic time. In Numeracy & Literacy, we also completed activities with a Christmas theme.

On the last week of term, the children enjoyed a visit from Santa and all children recieved a little gift. We also had a 'Christmas Party Day' and ate lots of lovely food. Thank you to all those parents that brought food or drink in for this day.

With only one full week left in school, we will now be doing lots of activities related to Christmas. In Literacy, we will continue learning about poetry by listening to lots of different Christmas poems and making a Christmas box for someone special with lots of special words to describe them. In Numeracy this week, we will focus on revising the numbers 0-10. Through Christmas activities, we will be reading, writing and counting to 10 correctly. Topic work this week, will involve making Christmas calendars and cards. We will also be learning about our 5th sense 'touch'.

This week, we were only in school for 2 days but still managed to do lots of exciting things! We began learning about the Jewish Festival 'Hanukkah' as part of our Topic and Literacy. In Literacy, we listened to a variety of different poems based on this festival and enjoyed writing a letter to Santa to ask him for a few special presents. We made stars from card and tissue paper to go on our display board for 'Hanukkah' and enjoyed playing in our newly decorated 'Christmas Home' role play. In Numeracy, we continued learning about money beginning to understand the vocabulary 'more' / 'less' and money values.

Sorry for the delay! I have been busy writing reports!

This week, we have had a very busy week as alongside our lessons, we have been busy practicing for the Christmas Show. Everyday we have been learning our dance and singing Christmas songs. Miss Joanne has also been assessing us this week, in preparation for writing our reports. In Literacy, we ended our journey of 'traditional tales' by making up our own stories based on 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. We choose different animals for the story and a different baddie.

In Numeracy this week, we began to learn about money. We talked about the values of different coins, sorted coins and played role-playshop games.

As part of our topic work this week, Miss Joanne brought in a range of fruit and vegetables for us to taste. For our 4th sense 'taste', we discussed which fruit or vegetables we liked or disliked, then drew a picture of our favourite foods in our topic books. We also started our Christmas activities this week helping Miss Joanne to decorate the Christmas tree and decorating stockings for our Christmas home corner.

This week, we continued learning about story structure in Literacy by looking at the traditional tale 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. We enjoyed re-telling the story ourselves by making a bridge with construction materials, using 3 billy goats and using our own troll baddie. In phonics, we learned our last set of letter sounds this term 'ie' 'ee' and 'or'. * The letter sounds are becoming more tricky now as we are beginning to learn long vowel sounds, so please encourage your child to listen to the songs on the CD as this is one of the most effective ways of them learning these sounds *

We began learning about 3-D shapes this week as part of our Numeracy work. We printed with 3-D shapes, made pictures, built objects, made 3-D shapes out of play dough and sorted them in the sand play. By doing these activities, we also consolidated our knowledge of 2-D shapes and most of us are now able to name the four basic 2-D shapes and describe them.

Topic work this week was exciting as we learned about Eid. We learned that during this festival, lots of presents are exchanged and children are often given sweets. We love cooking activities so one of the activities we did this week was to make sweets for Eid. We then made and decorated little boxes to put them in.

This week, we will be learning about the festival Eid in Topic and doing lots of fun activities related to it. In phonics, we will be learning the last three letter sounds this term 'ie', 'ee' and 'or'. Our week started off with a bit of excitement when we had a practice fire alarm. The fireman came to time us and were very proud of how quickly we all exited the building. They then gave us a talk about what they do, what they wear and how to keep safe if a fire was to occur. We got to see the fire engine and saw how a hose works.

Practicing to write our sounds this week

This week we started our last set of letter sounds for this term by learning to recognise, say and write 'ai', 'j' and 'oa'. We also learned various vocabulary that contained these sounds (rain, train, brain, sail, tail, jam, jelly, jet, jumper, boat, coat, road and soap). In Literacy, we had a fun week listening to the traditional tales 'The Gingerbread Man' and 'The Little Red Hen'. We used role play masks to act out some of these traditional tales and we even got to make biscuits of the Gingerbread Man, an activity we all really enjoyed! We also made up our own stories of the Gingerbread Man by adding our own animals.

In Numeracy this week, we have been learning the vocabulary related to height (e.g. tall/short, taller/shorter, tallest/shortest) though a variety of games and activities. We have learned to order three sizes by height and measure objects using non-standard measures. In topic, we have been learning the to name items of clothing using the phrase "This is a.....". This week, we sorted items of clothing into those we would wear in a hot country and those we would wear in a cold country.

Next week, we will continue our journey of traditional tales in Literacy by looking at the stories 'The Gingerbread Man' and 'The Little Red Hen'. We will act out these stories and create our own similar stories. In Numeracy, we will be comparing heights of different objects to encourage us to use the vocabulary related to size. Phonics work will involve learning the new sounds 'ai', 'j' and 'oa' and any vocabulary related to these sounds. In Topic this week, we will be talking about good and bad (in relation to the stories we have read). We will also be talking about hot and cold countries and sorting the clothes we would need to wear for each.

Looking at goodies and baddies in stories

This week we have had a fun week learning about Diwali. We listened to the story of Rama & Sita as part of our Literacy lesson and some of the older children who celebrate Diwali came and told us all about it. Unfortunately, Miss Joanne was not very well on Tuesday, however Miss Lucy was a star and helped us all to make a diva lamp with clay. When Miss Joanne returned to school, we painted our diva lamps in lovely colours. We then added a tea light and took them home for our mummy and daddy - I hope you liked them!

In Numeracy this week, we have continued looking at time. We read the story 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and did activities related to it to help us remember the days of the week. We have been learning the 'days of the week' song everyday in class so most of us are very good at reciting them in this context. We also learned about clocks and how a minute is a unit of time by timing ourselves doing different actions (e.g. clapping, jumping).

Next week, we will be learning the letter sound 'b' in Phonics, then recapping the last set of letters (g, o, u, l, f, b). In Literacy, we will be starting a new topic of 'Winter festivals and Traditional Tales' starting off looking at traditional tales with goodies and baddies. We will be listening to the story of Rama & Sita and talking about Diwali. In topic, we will then continue our theme of Diwali by making diva lamps. We only had 3 days in school so this week was a nice short week! We still managed to fit in lots of exciting things to do. We learned the letter sounds 'l' and 'f' and vocabulary related to each sound: lion, lollipop. lizard, ladybird, letters, lemon; fireman, fingers, fish, feather, flower and frog. In Numeracy, we began learning about time and will continue this next week. In Literacy, we made our own spider shape poems and we also learned about 'Dad' from the Oxford Reading Tree books. Topic work involved looking at our 3rd sense 'smell' and we talked about what our nose is for and what are nice or nasty smells. Friday, was an amazing day out at Sioux City, enjoyed by all. Don't forget: Monday 31st October and Tuesday 1st November are holiday days for Canterbury School. Hope you enjoy your two days off and enjoy any Halloween celebrations you attend. On Friday, we will also be going on a trip to Sioux City to see the animals of the Wild West, experience some of their shows and look around the miniture city. In school, we will be learning the sounds l and f. We will be designing our own spider shape poem linked to the work we have been doing in Literacy and we will be introduced to the last main character of the Oxford Reading Tree stories. In Numeracy, we will begin looking at time, sequencing everyday activities and reciting the days of the week. In topic work this week, we will look at our 3rd sense 'smell' and discuss what are nice smells and what are nasty smells.

We had a fun filled week of Halloween activities. We read a Halloween story, made spider or pumpkin masks and made a Halloween Collage. In phonics, we learned three new sounds 'g', 'o' and 'u' and learned new vocabularly related to each sound.

Halloween is nearly upon us so this week we will be doing lots of fun activities related to it. In topic, we will be making Halloween masks and a spooky full moon collage. We will also we painting ghosts linked to our letter sound 'g' and be doing some Halloween patterns in Numeracy. In Phonics, we will be learning 3 new sounds: g, o and u. In Literacy, we will continue learning about shape poems and make our own. In Numeracy, our focus this week is length so we will be learning the vocabulary related to length and will be learning to put three lengths in order.

In Phonics this week, we have been practicing the sounds we have learned so far and have been learning some new key words. PARENTS - the key words have been sent home this week in your child's green book. Please encourage your child to practice reading these as often as possible. Most words are decodable by saying the sounds, however the words in red are tricky words and need to be learned by sight.

Poetry has been our theme in Literacy this week and we have been reading a variety of poems or books about Penguins and Polar Bears. We have been using our vocabulary in English to describe these animals to make shape poems. This week, we also learned about Biff, Chip's twin sister from Oxford Reading Tree and talked about what clothes and colours she was wearing.

Making Sets to Match the Numeral

We have learned to recognise the number '0' in Numeracy this week and we have been counting down from 10 to 0, understanding that 0 represents nothing. Our main focus this week has been recognising numbers to 10, matching numerals to the number in a set and counting objects (to 10) that can't be moved. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that we learn to recognise the numbers to 10 to continue the work we will be doing in Numeracy next term. This week, we have the numbers to practice in our green homework books. PARENTS - please practice these with us at home.

As part of our 'Me & My Home' topic, this week we started our journey learning about the 5 senses. We took a walk around the school and used our eyes to describe what we saw. We also learned that ears are for listening and we played a sound lotto game, where we had to listen to the different sounds and guess what they were.

Next week, we will be revising the sounds c/k, e, h, r, m and d in Phonics to make sure we know how to read and write these sounds correctly. In Literacy, we will be introduced to 'Biff', another character of the Oxford Reading Tree scheme. We will also be reading lots of books/poems about penguins and polar bears to start our journey of poetry. In Numeracy, we will be learning about the number '0' and will understand that it represents nothing. We will be counting back from 10 to 0 and will be matching numerals to the number of objects in a set (up to 10). In Topic work, we will begin looking at the senses 'Sight' and 'Hearing'. We will be focusing on learning the phrase "Can I ....?" e.g. when asking for water or to go to the toilet.

This week in Numeracy, we continued learning about addition. Our focus this week was addition by partitioning so we did lots of practical activities that involved partitioning 5 objects. We also began to understand that addition can be done any way round (e.g. 4+1=5 and 1+4=5).

In Literacy this week, we continued practicing the phrase "I went to ..." when telling our weekend news. Some of us have very exciting weekends, going on an aeroplane or flying to the moon! We met Barnaby Bear this week and Miss Joanne read a story about his holiday in England. We talked about the different things we would need to pack in our suitcase and had a go at writing our own postcards.

Phonics work involved learning the sounds r, m and d. We learned lots of new vocabulary to go with each sound: robot, rose, rainbow, river; mouse, map, money, moon; dragon, deer, doctor and dinosaur. We painted a rainbow for 'r', made a shape mouse for 'm' and sponge painted a dinosaur for 'd'. We really enjoyed these activities.

As we had a day off this week, we didn't get chance to start our topic work so next week we will be learning about the senses 'sight' and 'hearing'.

This week, we will continue to practice the phase "I went to...." when discussing our weekend news. In Literacy, we will be meeting Barnaby Bear and talking about his journey to the seaside. Our sounds this week are r, m and d so to help us learn these, we will be doing creative activities related to these sounds. In Numeracy this week, we will continue to focus on understanding addition. This week our focus will be addition by partitioning and we will be looking at different ways that we can partition 5. In Topic this week, we will begin to learn about the first of our five senses: Sight.

Phonics - Practicing the 'h' sound

This week in Phonics, we learned the letter sounds c/k, e and h. We made a patterned number caterpillar for 'c/k' sound, read the Elmer story and painted our own colourful elephants for 'e' and cut out and re-assembled the different parts of a house for 'h'. We continued talking about journeys in Literacy, discussing where we would go if we had a magic bed.

In Numeracy this week, the children have begun to add one more through different practical activities and games. We have also been learning to count on from any number up to 10.

Topic work this week involved looking at photos and discussed how in some countries some people travel by elephant, horse or camel. We then talked about all the different ways we have travelled and added them to a bar chart. We found out that most people in Gran Canaria travel by car. We also discussed road safety and talked about how to keep safe when travelling.

C/k, e and h will be our new sounds next week and we will be doing lots of creative activities to reinforce these. A number caterpillar for 'c', an elephant for 'e' and a house for 'h'. We will continue learning about 'Journeys' in Literacy and will be discussing more magic (fantasy) journeys. We will be looking at the number 9 in Numeracy and start simple adding by adding one more. Our Topic work next week involves talking about different ways of traveling and learning about how to keep safe when traveling. We will also be having a visitor to the school on Wednesday to talk to us about 'eating healthily'.

We have been swimming for 2 weeks now. Luckily, the weather is very hot so it is nice to jump in the water to cool down. This week in swimming, we have been gaining confidence in the water by jumping into a hoop and going under the water to collect an object.

Writing our Gorilla stories

We started a new topic of 'Journeys' this week in Literacy. We read the story 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne and talked about fantasy journeys we would like to do with the gorilla. We also discussed journeys we do everyday e.g. to school, to the shops.

We were also introduced to Floppy (the dog from the Oxford Reading Tree Books) and found out some information about him. We already know that he is not very good at counting as we have a puppet 'Floppy' in the classroom who always makes mistakes and us children, being very clever, have to help him!

In Numeracy this week, we have been starting to count up to 100 using a big number square. Miss Joanne thinks we are very good at counting :) We have been learning about all kinds of patterns (shapes, colours, objects, movements etc) and have been creating our own 2 or 3 shape/colour patterns. Our number this week was '8' so we practiced finding the number 8, counting to 8 and made our own number 8 jigsaws.

In Phonics, we had a revision week, recapping the six sounds we have learned so far (s, a, t, i, p, n) and practiced how to write them correctly. PARENTS - please help us practice these at home.

For Topic work this week, we made pictures of our family and practiced the English vocabulary when naming different members (mummy, daddy, sister, brother, baby, grandma, grandpa). We also learned some new family members (auntie, uncle and cousin). We also talked about where we live in Gran Canaria and placed ourselves on a map.

Next week, we will be recapping the first set of letter sounds - don't forget to practice these regularly at home and have fun singing along to the songs. We will begin a mini topic of 'Journeys' as part of our Literacy lessons, talking about journeys we do regularly (e.g. going to school) and making up fantasy journeys (e.g. going to the moon). We will also meet another character of the Oxford Reading Tree scheme, 'Floppy' the dog. In Numeracy this week, our focus is patterns. We will be looking at patterns of shapes, colours and objects and we will be creating our own patterns. We will also be learning to recognise the number 8. As part of our topic work this week, we will be talking about where we live and adding ourselves to a map of Gran Canaria. We will also continue drawing pictures of our family and learn to name them in English.

We continued practicing our first set of letter sounds. We learned to read and write 'i', 'p' and 'n' and learned lots of new vocabulary for each sound: iguana, Indian, internet, ink, ice cream; pineapple, pizza, pear, parrot, paint, panda; nest, net, night, neck, nails and night. As part of our creative activities linked to our letter sounds, we explored what happens to ice cubes when they are out of the freezer for 'i', collaged pizzas to go in our cafe role play for 'p' and printing numbers for 'n'.

In Literacy this week, we have been recapping the phrases "I am...." and "I like/don't like.....". We also met 'Kipper', a character from the books we will start reading next term. As part of our topic work this week, we looked at our baby photos and compared them to photos of us now. Miss Joanne thinks we were all very cute babies! We talked about how we had changed and how our needs are different now.

Next week, we will be learning the letter sounds 'i' 'p' and 'n' and taking part in creative activities linked to these sounds. We will begin practicing our first key words, which will be sent home in their green books. We will be introduced to the first character of the Oxford Reading Tree Books and will be recapping the phrase "I am...." and "I like/don't like......". In Numeracy, we will be looking at 2-D shapes and learning about their properties. As part of our topic work, we will be looking at ourselves as babies and now to see how we have changed.

This week, we have continued to learn about our new class. We are all getting better at sitting nicely on the carpet and listening to our teacher or other children speaking. We really enjoyed starting to learn our letter sounds this week. We learned how to read and write 's' 'a' and 't'. We also learned lots of new English vocabulary for each letter sound such as star, sock, snake, skates; ambulance, alligator, ant, apple; tree, tiger, teddy bear and tomato. For our display and to emphasise our learning, we coloured a snake for 's', collaged an apple for 'a' and gave a teddy bear a toothbrush and toothpaste for 't'. REMEMBER all the songs and sounds are on the CD for you to practice at home and every Friday, you will have the sound sheets in your little book to practice writing.

In Numeracy this week, we have been focusing on remembering the numbers 1-6. We have been matching sets of objects to each number and we have been ordering numbers to at least 6. In our topic work this week, we looked at pictures of animals with their babies and talked about when we were babies ourselves.. We will be showing our baby photos next week and discussing in more detail how we have changed. In circle time this week, we talked about things we like or don´t like using the phrase "I like......& I don´t like....."

Next week, we will start our journey of learning the letter sounds in preparation for reading and writing. We will be learning 3 sounds a week starting with the sounds 's' 'a' and 't'. As well as learning how to read and write these letter sounds, we will be learning lots of new English vocabulary of things that begin with each sound. To reinforce our learning, we will also be getting involved in creative activities linked to each sound.

We will also be practicing our numbers up to 5, matching sets, playing number recognition games and ordering numbers to 5. We will be practicing basic English commands such as "Water please" / "Toilet please" and we will be discussing our likes and dislikes using the phrase "I like/don't like......".

Welcome parents and children in K2 to another fantastic year! Our first week has been filled with lots of exciting things. We have been getting to know our classroom, learning where things are kept and playing with lots of new toys. We have also been learning the new class rules and trying hard to sit nicely on the carpet to listen to our teacher. Welcome children and parents to K2. My Name is Miss Joanne and I will be your new teacher. We have some changes within the school this year. We have a new Head Teacher, Miss Claudia supported by the Deputy Head Teacher, Miss Paula. Lets work hard this year and we will succeed in whatever goals we set for ourselves.
