Welcome back to the 3rd Term - Week Beginning 8th April & 15th April
Welcome back to the last term in K2. I hope you all enjoyed your Easter holiday!
We had a busy first week back talking and writing about what we did during the Easter holidays. Miss Joanne also found an 'egg' in her garden, that we were all fascinated with and we have been waiting patiently everyday to see what would happen to it.
Here is an overview of what we will be learning this term:
Our topics are:
1) Dinosaurs
We will be learning all about dinosaurs. We will be talking about where they come from (an egg), what their environment was like and when they were on Earth. We will be learning how to find information about our favourite dinosaur by using books, information sheets and the internet. We will also be looking closely at them to describe their features and make our own fact sheets. We will be listening to lots of dinosaur stories, making up our own dinosaur profile of a 'good' dinosaur and writing our own dinosaur story.
2) Journeys
For this topic, we will begin talking about regular journeys we make e.g. to school, the beach or the park. We will recap our school trip to the park and begin learning to name objects in the park. We will look at how people travel now and years ago and how this has changed. We will talk about journeys to the seaside, talk about the things we would need and write a postcard. We will also begin to learn the vocabulary related to the beach. We will listen to a range of journey books, such as 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt', 'Rosie's Walk' and 'Walking through the Jungle' and discuss which is our favourite and why. We will also make up our own magic journey to space.
Literacy work where possible will be linked to our topics. In Literacy, we will continue to read using the Oxford Reading Tree book scheme. There will be a lot of focus on writing this term, encouraging children to build up to writing small simple sentences. We have now learnt all the Jolly Phonics sounds, but we will continue to practise these most days in school, along with practising segmenting and blending of words. The children will also be introduced to spellings.
Mathematics work will involve recapping the numbers to 15 and introducing the numbers 16-20 (and above). We will learn to order, write and say the number that is one more/less than a number to 20. We will be counting in rote up to 100 and will continue counting in 2's, 5's and 10's. We will keep practising the techniques we have learnt for 'adding' and 'subtracting' and play lots of problem solving games. The names and descriptions of 2-D and 3-D shapes will be consolidated and we will be learning to recognise coins.

Easter Fun!
The last week of term 2 was a fun filled week of Easter activities. We had 'Sports Day', where the infants and the juniors were split into groups and rotated round a range of sports events. For the infants, they took part in the following activities: long jump, obstacle course, egg and spoon races and aiming beanbags into hoops. It was a fun day, enjoyed by all and the children all received a certificate for participating in the event. On Wednesday, we went on a school trip to Canterbury School in San Lorenzo, where we watched an amazing show of 'The Lion King' performed by the juniors. The last day of term was our big 'Easter Egg Competition'. Most children participated and some of the creations were amazing! All the children had the chance to look at the eggs and were asked to choose their favourite from each class. A tally was made and there were two winners chosen from each class. In class this week, we also took part in a range of Easter activities. We did some Easter Mathematics, made Easter cards and decorated Easter boxes. On Thursday, we enjoyed making a chocolate Easter nest, which we left in the fridge overnight to set and guess what?? the Easter Bunny came and visited the school and put some chocolate eggs in our nests. We were all very excited!

Week Beginning 4th March & 11th March
We have had a busy few weeks preparing for the end of term. We have now learnt all the Jolly Phonics letter sounds and the majority of our key words. Next term, we will continue revising all sounds and key words to aid our reading and writing. Please continue to practise these at home also. In Literacy and Topic work, we have been looking at 'life cycles'. We have listened to many stories to help us learn about the life cycle of the butterfly, frog and plant. In Literacy, we sequenced the pictures for the 'Life Cycle of a Butterfly', then attempted to write simple captions. We also labeled the different parts of a plant. In Topic, we talked about animals that come from eggs and those that don't and sorted them accordingly. We also discussed what animals (particularly pets) need to stay happy and healthy. In Mathematics, we have been recapping 2-D and 3-D shapes and looking at their properties. We have also been learning about position and direction, by following specific instructions. This week, we have been learning about time. We made our own clocks and learnt how to tell different o'clock times e.g. 2 o'clock, 5 o'clock.

Week Beginning 25th February
This week, we started learning the last set of Jolly Phonics sounds (qu, ou and oi) and practised the new tricky words 'you' and 'they'. In Literacy, we looked at the life cycle of a human. We talked about how we have grown and what has changed. We made sentences using "I can..." to describe some of the things we can do now, that we couldn't do as a baby. In Topic, we sequenced a set of pictures from baby to elder and started our 'Farm Collage' by painting our backgrounds. In Mathematics, we started learning about subtraction (taking away). We practised many different subtraction techniques such as counting back on a number line, using our fingers to take away, and using objects.
